A disaster declaration within hours brought a similar declaration from the state the next day, followed by the national declaration soon afterward. That allowed FEMA to move in to assist those who had significant losses which were not fully covered by insurance.
Mayor Davlin also marshaled community resources which provided hot meals to emergency workers and residents displaced by the damage. Shelter for those in need and other assistance helped our community weather the storm and began the healing process.
Preparing our city for future storms was key to Mayor Davlin's leadership. Within weeks he presented an ordinance to the City Council that would provide for the purchase of an entirely new state of the art siren system to cover every part of the City in times of emergency. He wanted to make sure that when disaster strikes again, we would have adequate warning. Before the holidays arrived, the sirens had all been installed and fully tested.
Mayor Davlin, again, brought the troops together for several other storms including the ice storm in early December 2006. While not as damaging to homes, this act of nature brought down many more trees and left neighborhoods powerless for days. Public Works crews worked day and night hauling away branches and limbs. Davlin had the foresight to activate units of city government that would work together effectively to restore our community back to normal.
